The seabed of Galician estuaries is contaminated with sludge from human activity: industrial, aquaculture, etc. so that the height of the sludge layer under mussel polygons grows an average of 10 cm per year.
The low particle size and low compactness of this material makes difficult the recovery, so that all extractive procedures so far tested were incompatible with the simultaneous pursuit of aquaculture activities
The research group Marine Innovacions (Universidade of A Coruña) has worked about several options and, as a result of its studies, has proposed an extraction process and
sludge treatment, innovative and very advantageous with respect to alternatives raised to date.
Research work being carried out have been commissioned by the shipyard NODOSA, who leads the research project TANK VESSEL DESIGN FOR CLEANING SEABED ref:

Keywords: trailing suction hopper dredge; sludge treatment; seabed cleaning
