The existence of valuable historic buildings in Spanish territory is remarkable. This paper focuses on the revaluation and management of old mills in Spain. These mills are ancient devises that would transform the energy of running water, wind, or animal or human force for the development of many different kinds of activities, among which the most commonly known about is milling. A mill is also the building in which one may still be able to find those old machines. In the actual context of change in rural territories, these elements are starting to acquire other uses and functions in relation to rural development.
A specific model on the sustainable management of cultural heritage has been applied in the development of a set of indicators which is suggested as a supporting tool for the sustainable management of historical buildings.
The application of the tool to an exemplary initiative of mill revaluation, in a rural town in the north of Spain, is also presented.
