Land consolidation has demonstrated to be a necessary tool for rural development, preserving its usefulness in those areas where dimension of farms continue to be a limitation for their growth. Nevertheless, the current land consolidation process presents severe deficiencies both in the administative process and in the environmental impact derived from their practise.
In this work current deficiences in land consolidation processes are assessed from an environment and landscape perspective. The way of how such deficiences could be
solutioned by means of the optimization of key stages in land consolidation projects is also approached. With this objective, a case study is analysed in a recently finished land
consolidation area, in the municipality of Baleira (Lugo). Indicators of pre- and postconsolidation are used to identify key impacts, their origins, and their possible correction into the consolidation process. This analysis is expected to contribute to the general improvement of land consolidation processes.
