The Spanish 10/2008 Law marks that selective waste collection has to be made at least in two fractions (fermentable and restwaste). Nevertheless, Spanish town councils have mostly chosen the option of separating waste in more than these two fractions.
The separation of recyclable materials at source has remarkably increased the complexity of the necessary logistic to collect each type of material in the most suitable conditions. Different collection networks, frequencies and distribution of the containers have to be designed, as well as being needed to considerate many other factors as the quality of the collected waste, the economic costs, etc.
In this paper, an informatic tool based on geographic information systems is presented. With this tool, the most suitable collection system for a city in each moment and in the best possible conditions can be designed. The tool works as an extension for ArcView 9.2, and has been developed with Model Builder application from ArcGIS. It allows the user to perform the activities of location of collection points, estimation of waste generation in each collection point, distribution of the containers, collection routes analysis and economic evaluation of the collection system. For the validation of the tool, a practical application on the municipality of Castellón has been performed.
