Daily rainfall data are usually registered during a 24-hour period ranging from 7 am to 7 am. Nevertheless, the maximum rainfall value for the same time interval rarely coincides with the daily one, usually being higher. In order to compare both values their relation would be analyzed and the conversion factor would be obtained.
Commonly, only daily rainfall data are available in weather stations. Thus, knowing the conversion when working with many hydrological models.
The US Weather Bureau (1962, 1965) uses an empirical conversion factor of 1.13 to transform daily rainfall data into 24 hour maximum precipitation.
In this work the conversion factor for eastern Andalusia has been obtained using hourly rainfall data series from 1981 to 2007 of four locations Jaén, Málaga, Granada and Almería. For this period, annual and monthly extreme data series of daily and 24 hour rainfall are analyzed.
Keywords: Extreme 24 hour rainfall; Maximum daily rainfall; Time series; Conversion factor.
