The area of structural optimization has had a great importance in the last decades. Researchers’ efforts trying to reduce the weight of structures have provided numerous
papers in this field. However, a minimum weight design is not necessarily the minimum cost design; only a small fraction of the papers of structural optimization deals with minimizing the final cost.
In this study, a cost optimization methodology of concrete structures is presented, that without forgetting the importance of reducing the energy use of the process. The mixture of different components and materials in those structures provides us with numerous design alternatives which diversify the final cost of it. In order to minimize the final cost and the energy use, an algorithm is programmed to get the best structure, and also data mining techniques are applied to take out useful knowledge in order to help the designer. The proposed methodology is applied in a case study of unidirectional slabs with lattice reinforcement joists.
