This article summarizes the researching process executed to develop a composite material consist of polyester resin like polymeric matrix and a vegetable fiber like filler. The vegetable fiber Is a residue in Colombia known as rice husk. A dosing among polyester resin and rice husk has been proposed, from this a set of test pieces were made up in order to do an experimental work associated to the mechanical characterization of the composite material in two level, compression strength and bulk density. The other hand, a methodology has been developed to build I beams with the composite material, this methodology was used to make up a set of I beams in order to test they from a vertical load test focused to characterize mechanically the composite material in the level of modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity and the description of load – deflection behaviour of the I beams. Finally a feasibility analysis related to one possibility of the I beam application in the structural field of civil engineering is argued.
Key Words: I beams, polyester resin, rice husk, load – deflection curve, modulus of rupture, compression strength, modulus of elasticity.
