Although the last Audi A5 designed by Hofele Design could be considered as a work of art because of its beauty, there would be no justification for not fulfilling safety
requirements or consuming twenty times as much as its competitors. Nevertheless, one century after Louis Souillivan assertion “Form follows function” and two thousand
years after Vitrubio fixed with “firmitas, utilitias and venustas” the principles of Architecture, the architectural project continues being tackled as a unique, one-andonly,
personal problem with the consideration of a work of art.
Even this approach could be applicable in singular and emblematic works, it is not in most of the building situations, and note even acceptable in an industrial,
tecnopolised society, based in concepts of competitiveness and demanding with the quality of its products.
In this context, the application of the Spanish Building Technical Code, provides with an extraordinary occasion to reflect, once again, on the organization and planning of
architectural projects, and the relationship between architects and engineers and the role of the Civil Services in the process.
An approximation to the architectural project based in a multidisciplinary, integrating and transversal approach, with functions, competences and responsibilities clearly
defined in the Spanish Law of Building Ordering will be defended.
