An hórreo is a barn built of wood and/or stone, which rises through ground pillars (pegollos), finished in some plates to prevent access by rodents and often have walls with slots for ventilation. They are use to store agricultural products and household goods.
Despite its cultural and ethnographic importance, law of protection for knowing the state of the horreo in Asturias is 1 / 2001 of Cultural Heritage of the Principality. At this moment, many Hórreos are destroyed by pass devenation happen and lack of investment.
Due to the age of the buildings and their state of neglect, many of them require rehabilitation proceedings. However, there is not any criterion to carry out these actions. There is an increased probability of loss of essence for the items restored and the impossibility of carrying out an assessment of the adequacy by the Administration. Therefore must make a homogeneous criterion to be followed in such cases by establishing a methodology to be applied. This work is part of a research project at the University of Oviedo which sets guidelines to follow in the restoration operations in order to create a protected market of this human heritage construction.
Keywords: hórreo, elevated barn, restoration.
