The Júcar River shows clearly Mediterranean behaviour, characterized by a large disproportion between its ordinary and extraordinary flow rates, and by an extreme regime of flow rates with high-magnitude freshets that lead once-in-a-century floods that burst the river’s banks and cause considerable damage to the surrounding land and population.
In view of this situation, the need arose to implement automatic hydrologic information systems (AHIS) to enable us to draw on hydrologic-hydraulic data in real time and foresee the future behaviour of the basins.
The entire basin is divided into sub-basins containing the Remote Stations (RS) and the Data Hubs (DH).
The Basin’s Data Processing Centre (DPC) collects data from time to time from the hubs and then collates these for subsequent organization and management. This network has a twin-level hierarchical structure: The RS communicate with the DH using a secondary network protocol and the DH transfer the information the DPC via a primary network protocol.
The aim is to study the new technologies to be implemented in an AHIS to enable the optimization and improvement of its response to emergency situations and the management, operation and maintenance of the system. Keywords: Hydrological information; system management; operational maintenance; functional software.
