Traditionally, international policies have promoted actions focused on reduction of emissions, energy use optimization and integration of renewables. Among the different sectors, agriculture accounts for 10% of the total EU and currently presents a relevant percentage of CO2 emissions. Subsequently, it is a clear candidate to integrate sustainable proposals, as in this work, through the use of renewable resources in groundwater pumping applications. In this scenario, an economic analysis of photovoltaic use for pumping purposes along a year is proposed and assessed, comparing different configurations, sizes of installations and power demanded by the crops according to their water requirements. Nowadays, photovoltaic solar installations are mostly used only during the irrigation season, and then they offer a relevant opportunity to optimize of the energy produced in the installation itself by means of the injection and sale of the extended energy surplus throughout the natural year. The study also includes aspects that influence economic viability, such as the proximity of the electricity grid and state energy policies.
