One of the main costs of the current steel industry is due to its high energy needs, and above all its high electricity demand. Under these premises, the integration of renewable energies offers an opportunity for the reduction of energy dependence, emissions and costs. In this scenario, the present work analyzes the technical-economic viability of the integration of renewable resources in a real environment of the steel sector.
In the case of the study, the objective is to achieve in this way a contribution midst 15 and 25% of the real energy consumed in a plant of the Spanish business fabric within the steel sector. Thus, based on certain investment assumptions, the application of the two most mature generation technologies in the electrical field will be analyzed: wind and photovoltaic.
Specifically, the implementation of a wind farm in combination with a photovoltaic solar installation will be studied, analyzing advantages and disadvantages of each resource, its contribution for electricity generation and the resulting return period for investment based on current electricity costs. The results also include the adaptation of renewable facilities to the specific industrial process they feed.
