    Abstract
    Manabi’s province has the highest child chronic under-nutrition in the Costa region in Ecuador. One of the reasons of the farmers Food Insecurity is the growing trend towards monoculture that implies a decrease in crops diversification and an increase of the vulnerability farmer who depend on a single crop. The government of Manabi’s province promotes projects in the rural sector to enable the families facing risk to food insecurity to access a food basic basket to meet their nutritional needs. The aim of this paper is to analyses the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of Manabi’s population as well as their nutritional needs as a baseline study for the identification of crops that could potentially be included in home gardens to conform an accessible food basic basket.
