Torque measurements in nacelles test benches are essential for determining and improving their efficiency. At the moment, there is no method for obtaining direct and traceable torque measurements, since nacelle test benches operates in the range of the MN•m.
Centro Español de Metrología (CEM), thanks to its collaboration in the European project EMPIR 14IND14 “Torque measurement in the MN•m range”, has developed a transfer standard for torque measurements in the MN•m range, by means of force measurements.
This new system allows to ensure the traceability of the measurements obtained within nacelle test benches. Through better and more reliable torque measurements inside wind turbine drive trains it would be possible to study its performance and to precisely determine their efficiency. Furthermore, thanks to obtaining more accurate information it would be possible to include modifications that might be needed in order to improve the efficiency.
This paper will explain the different available methods for torque and force measuring in high operating ranges, as well as the characteristics of CEM’s proposal for a new transfer standard.
