The generalization of the concept of information transparency and an increasing sensitivity toward green aspects have led to a growing trend toward the incorporation of information related to a product sustainable development awareness, usually in the form of labels on the packaging of the product. They are usually symbols referring to aspects related to the responsibility of the product (and of the consumer), including, for example, and depending on the type of product under consideration, its origin, environmental impact, social impact, or health impact.
This article describes the results of a review and classification of logos and symbols associated with this type of information about the sustainable awareness of the product, depending on the dimension of sustainability to which they relate, the type of the certification to which they are associated, and if they are widely applied in Spain. In addition, a study about the application of this type of labelling on the front of the packaging has been made for food products, in different web pages of supermarkets and specialized stores. Results are intended to provide information about the use of this labelling in the communication of information on sustainable practices to the consumer.
