The European Community's policy requires a sustainable and environmentally friendly development, in which the consumption of raw materials was controlled; and emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere, water and soil, as well as waste generation, were minimized. Furthermore, recycling or re-use of by-products should also be promoted. In connection with this policy, the implementation of an Environmental Integrated Management System allows:
- Improve the company activity in environmental issues.
- Control the processes involved in the activity to reduce environmental impacts.
- Monitor compliance with the environmental legislation, as well as the requirements or conditions imposed by the administration on which depends the company activity.
In this work, we identify and relate each of the processes that conform the production cycle of a quarry of limestone for the manufacture of aggregates for the construction. After this, we analyze the environmental issues that can be affected by the industrial activity. Finally, we establish measures to mitigate or minimize environmental impacts. Based on this diagnosis, they are prepared the documents required by the regulations for the proper implementation of the Environmental Integrated Management System.
