At present, due to European and Spanish legislation, it is mandatory to treat the municipal solid waste (MSW) in order to minimize its final disposition. Nevertheless, from the total MSW which is processed in mechanical and biological treatment plants, a large part of ends as reject fraction. Approximately, in relation to input material, the percentage of reject fraction is 73% in recovery and composting plants, 42% in packaging waste sorting plants and 31% in composting plants of selectively collected organic fraction. This reject fraction represents 48% of the waste that comes to the landfill and it is composed fundamentally by combustible materials, so it can be considered as solid refuse fuels (SRF) for its energetic utilization and also, be closer to achieve the “zero waste landfilling” objective.
This work analyzes and compares the physico-chemical characteristics of the SRF produced from the reject fractions of different waste management facilities, as well as its classification according to the norm CEN 15359. The objective is to establish different qualities of SRF and, from these, to determine which may be the most appropriate energetic utilization.
