    Abstract
Proper management of stormwater is a particularly important aspect which largely determines the urban development and its sustainability. Unlike traditional interventions -purely quantitative and focusing on the evacuation of peak flows during a storm-, contamination of rainwater and its effects on the receiving environment have become determinant design factors during the last few decades. Added to that is the convenience of reducing the flow to transport in order to limit the costs of construction and operation of new drainage systems, as well as to permit the continued operation of existing systems if an increase of their catchment areas takes place. All of this has led to a reformulation of urban runoff management, resulting in what is known as sustainable urban drainage systems, whose incorporation into urban development projects should be encouraged and required. This paper describes a number of sustainable drainage measures and presents the application of some of them in the urban development of a coastal zone consisting of a littoral plane with high water table. Keywords: stormwater; drainage systems; urban development projects; coastal zone; sustainability; environmental engineering
