The European Convergence process has compelled to adapt the university system of all European Union countries to meet the assumptions set out by the European Higher Education Area.
To this end, new educational methodologies have been proposed such as the one described in the article. This educational research is based on the use of simulation software like CYPECAD®. Following the teaching lessons of the Spanish standard of concrete, several cases of study are proposed to students, which are based on the design of a construction by combining two different geometries and four structural typologies. This combination creates a total number of eight tests, for which students should provide a technically feasible solution to achieve good marks. The final marks of students are according to the evaluation of the cost and feasibility of proposed solutions.
In addition, students have to defend and reason out their solution proposed, which may involve additional and innovative concepts in their proposal, such as CO2 emissions, recycled materials, sustainability, etc. The total score of the eight tests is the sum of each single evaluation and establishes the final distribution of the student marks from practical classes.
