Cement-wood composites are an opportunity for energetic and sustainable rehabilitation of buildings. The cement-wood composites exhibit low thermal conductivity and good sound absorbing performance. However these composites have worse mechanical properties than traditional concretes.
The mechanical characteristics of these materials depend on several factors. One of them is the cement-wood bonding consistency. The bonding consistency includes adhesion between cement and wood and the behavior of the cement transition zone. This paper presents a new method for assessing the cement-wood bonding consistency as a tool for preliminary exploration of possible surface treatments of wood, designed to improve the mechanical properties in the final composite.
Physical and chemical treatments of wood were tested, obtaining results of bonding consistency with cement, which allow selection of new treatments for the manufacture of cement-wood composites with improved mechanical properties.
