When a product has fulfilled its expected wear-out life, there are two alternative strategies, replacement by a new generation product or reusing the same item by extending its use. Reusing the product, sometimes does not involve long-term economic or ecological savings, due to several external and internal factors to the product.
Therefore, in this paper, it is proposed an analysis of economic and ecological viability of these two strategies, by adopting as a case of study electric washing machines, comparatively analyzing different devices, with different manufacturing years, in order to find the profitability of replacing of the old appliance with a new one, considering several usage scenarios and using the tools of Lice Cycle Costing (LCC) and Life-Cycle Assesment (LCA), for economic and ecological studies respectively.
Finally, it will be discussed the intelligent reuse options of this product by assessing the eco-efficiency of the proposed strategies
