This paper conducts an analysis of the influence of the product and process quality on the CO2 emissions, and thus to determine whether CO2 emissions can be a helpful indicator of the variables related to the quality and maintenance. Therefore, the possible use of the emissions as an indicator of the efficiency of the plant production is studied. In this sense, we analyse two components of efficiency, quality and availability, and the possible link with the sustainability of the process. The latter is of particular interest given the growing concern about the environment and the relevant legislation increasingly demanding.
For this purpose, the paper presents a case study focused on the drying process of paper manufacturing, which is responsible of almost all emissions CO2 in a plant of this kind, and also it is the bottleneck manufacturing process. A statistical analysis by analysis of variance and a calibration of different regression models are carried out, to identify significant variables most influential and quantify.
