Nowadays, GIS is used in different institutions that apply to sectors like regional planning, urbanism, etc., to better understand the spatial relationships between the elements which define the real world.
In this work it is shown how using a particular GIS, Geomedia Professional, digitizing and implementing of data regarding to the public lighting network is carried out, analysing the tools to completely define all network elements in this particular GIS.
Later, the simplified study method of energy efficiency, according to ‘Energy efficiency regulation of external lighting installations and its complementary technological instructions’, currently in force, is presented and it is shown how the GIS graphic representation from this study is useful to know the regulation compliance according to current legislation, the condition of different installations, and even to determine priority zones in which regulation is not satisfied. It is illustrated applying in a town sector in the province of Badajoz (southwestern Spain).
