When an industrial solid waste is managed, companies have to select the most suitable solution between different treatment processes available and consider multiple factors. The waste characteristics and their ability of utilization condition the process or set of processes that are technically possible. However, it is necessary to take into account other factors such as the availability of infrastructure, energy, water and other supplies, as well as the impacts that can cause the management of waste.
Having identified the different waste management alternatives, it is necessary to establish an assessment method to identify which one is the most efficient alternative in terms of various environmental, economic and social factors. To this end we propose the use of a decision support system. This system allows us to incorporate the assessment of a panel of experts and also break down the decision problem like a hierarchical problem. To this purpose, the analytic hierarchy method (AHP) is used, chose among other features for their adaptability, ease of use, objectivity, and repeatability.
