Storm tanks are increasingly used to control flooding caused by the increase of runoff flows generated by rainfalls. To speed up the construction of these infrastructures and reduce downtime of urban supplies, plastic modular elements are used as basic building structures. This paper presents the characterization of this type of modular elements. That is, determining the energy dissipation presented by these elements to water flow movement, and compare the hydraulic behavior of these modular reservoir with concrete conventional ones. Characterization of modular elements is made from a three dimensional model. Then CFD techniques are applied mainly focused on application of the VOF (Volume of Fluid) model. Final model has been validated using an experimental prototype. The prototype consists of 16 modular structures fully monitored in order to analyze both flows and water levels at different points of the system. The final result is a validated and calibrated model that can represent the behavior of such infrastructure against high intensity storms.es_ES
